All Aboard “The Story Train”!

Young children have sponge-like minds that learn and retain so much.  As a Story Train reader you’ll partner with another volunteer as you make twice monthly ‘whistle stops’ to read in Worcester preschool classrooms.  Fun & rewarding with engineer hats and train whistles all around!  Training provided.
WHAT?
“The Story Train” is a read-aloud offering to preschool students.  Pre-selected books are linked to the themes of the Houghton-Mifflin preschool curriculum in use in Worcester.  Readers are encouraged to engage with the children during and after reading as they highlight connections with the theme by encouraging discussion and asking questions.
WHO?
RSVP-Worcester Area Volunteers who have participated in five hours of training embrace the “The Story Train” theme by wearing a train engineer hat and a bandana.  With an emphasis on the joy of books and reading, the volunteers announce reading time by blowing their train whistles and “collecting” the children one at a time wherever they are in the classroom and together they chug to the reading area.

WHY?
“The Story Train” is meant to enhance the existing curriculum by presenting theme-related material in an engaging way.  By their regular presence, the volunteers highlight reading as something important shared by people other than the classroom teachers and parents.

WHEN?
The volunteers expect to visits classrooms twice monthly on a regular schedule agreed upon with the preschool teacher.  Volunteers may or may not arrive in pairs and may or may not read to both morning and afternoon classes on the same day.  This is determined by the preference of the volunteer and by arrangement with the teacher.
