Who cares if a                                             child learns to                                           read?

You do. You care. You understand that the way to build a more literate, more vibrant community is one person – one child - at a time.

When you help a child learn to read you are also writing your own story: the story of one person who cares enough to help a child; the story of a quiet hero who understands that the best among us are those who, without fanfare,

show up week in and week out to do what needs to be done; the story of an individual who helps create young readers one alphabet letter, one syllable, one triumphant sentence at a time, linking the generations, reader to reader.  It is the story of you.  You are a “Reading Partner” in a Kindergarten, First, Second, or Third Grade classroom.

You anticipate the audible excitement as you enter.  You know deep down that you mean something to these children and that they mean something to you.  They show it in countless ways:  the way they smile quiet smiles when they are near you; the way they grab hold of your hand when they’re nervous; the way when you are leaving they ask if they will see you again. Then one day they discover that they can count on you, that they will see you again; you will return.
