A Stitch Just in Time for Literacy
Take your needle, my child, and work at your pattern; it will come out a rose by and by. Life is like that - one stitch at a time taken patiently and the pattern will come out all right like the embroidery. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes
Literacy Corps member and ESL volunteer tutor, Cathleen Nelson, has obtained permission from the kind folks at Funk and Weber Designs to replicate their needlework pattern of a beautiful key, emblematic of the “key to knowledge”. The Embroiders’ Guild of America in conjunction with “Needle and ThREAD: Stitching for Literacy” launched this effort to provide schools and libraries with bookmarks for young readers.
An accomplished needlework artist, Cathy is committed to literacy and is delighted she found a way to combine the two. She welcomes beginners and those skilled folks who love each and every opportunity to pick up needle and thread. Beginners will appreciate Cathy’s calm and patient instruction and veterans will enjoy her expertise. In addition to the key pattern, Cathy has researched and found a number of other delightful patterns perfect for this project.
The class/stitch-in will be held on Wednesdays, beginning September 22nd, from 1:00 until 2:30 PM for about six weeks. There is no charge for this class and though many materials are provided, those with extra thread, needles and cloth are encouraged to share. A minimum number of participants registered by Labor Day is required for the class to be held. Please call today at 508-791-7787.
