Worcester Senior Center and RSVP Collect 1200 Children’s Books for “City That Reads” Book Drive
How do you know when a book drive is successful? You ask RSVP Program Assistant, Nicole McLear. She’ll tell you. She let you know about the successful effort by the Worcester Senior Center and RSVP-Worcester Area volunteers to collect books on behalf of “Worcester, The City That Reads”. And McLear should know. She has kept a record of each new or gently used donated book and will happily point out that the dollar value represented is well over $4,000.
Worcester Senior Center Coordinator, Patty Hainesworth is delighted by the donations, especially because they represent a significant increase over last year.
“This generosity to the children of Worcester by the community’s senior citizens is extremely heartwarming”, says Barbara Drapos, Coordinator of RSVP Literacy Corps. The economic times are difficult but the oldest generation extends its hands to the youngest in a love of literacy and education. You cannot ask for more.
The book drive is part of a larger effort throughout Worcester to collect 20,000 books for the city’s school children. Books will be delivered to Chandler Magnet School after April and sorted by volunteers during the week of May 15th. Individuals who would like to help with delivery or sorting should contact Barbara at 508-791-7787.
